A Solofra there is only one industrial district of the South for the processing of hides. The district is located in the Province of Avellino, and it also includes the towns of Montoro Inferiore Montoro Superiore Serino and a total of 35,000 inhabitants. The production is mainly carried out by entrepreneurial families, which are specialized in the production of sheep and goat skins of small (40% of national production). From an initial address, the consortium now also produces shoe leather for clothing. The raw materials are imported mainly from Africa and the Middle East, although in recent years these countries have implemented policies for development of tanneries on the spot with some impact on the competitive dynamics of firms Solofra. More than half of leather production is destined for foreign markets, and to increase competitiveness has become widely used introduction of new organizational solutions and innovations in production processes, while not failing to respect the environment, by creating an experimental station for research on the leather and rawhide. 
Solofra, is the third largest Italian leather, has a little less than 400 tanneries, of which 130 are medium in size and all the other small, in addition to 99 companies and 17 packaging of chemicals.
